Extend an image

Grow an image beyond its original borders and let the AI paint the new area — outward-only outpainting, launched from the same button as Crop.

Extending (also called outpainting) grows an image outward past its edges and asks the AI to fill the new space with a natural continuation of the scene. It’s the mirror image of cropping: crop trims inward, extend adds outward. Your original stays put — the extended picture arrives as a new layer.

When to use

  • A render is framed too tightly and you want more room — sky above a building, foreground in front of it, or width for a banner.
  • You need the same image at a different aspect ratio without squashing it — extend to 16:9 for a slide, 9:16 for a phone, and so on.
  • You like the composition but want to reveal more of the world around it.

Steps

  1. Select the image layer you want to extend.
  2. Open the Crop tool — the Crop button in the layer’s floating action row.
  3. In the toolbar, switch the Crop ⇄ Extend toggle to Extend.
  4. Add space: drag any edge or corner outward to pad that side, or pick an aspect-ratio presetFree, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, 16:9, 9:16, 3:2, 2:3 — to grow the frame to that shape, centered on your image.
  5. Press Generate on the prompt bar (or Enter) to render. There’s no “Done” button — extending is a generation. Press Esc or the to cancel without rendering.

How it works

  • Extend is outward-only — the box can never move inside the image (to trim inward, use Crop instead).
  • The original pixels are preserved at their size; only the added border is newly generated, so the AI blends the extension into what’s already there.
  • No prompt needed — the AI reads the existing image and paints a matching continuation. Just extend and Generate.
  • It uses the model you’ve picked in the model picker and costs credits like any render, deducted only after it succeeds. The result is a new layer.

Tips

  • Extend in modest steps. A very large extension in one pass can look invented, or be rejected as too extreme for the model — grow a bit, generate, then extend again for big expansions.
  • With some models you must choose an aspect-ratio preset (the Free option is disabled) — pick the ratio closest to what you want.
  • Combine with Crop: reframe tight first, then extend the side you actually want more of.
